The College of Charleston, founded in 1770 is the oldest municipal college in the United States. When the College was purchased by the state of South Carolina, it expanded from two to more than twelve city blocks and closed several streets to automotive traffic to provide a generous pedestrian precinct in the heart of the campus. EP/A was fortunate to provide master planning followed by site planning and landscape design for the entire campus for seventeen years. Streetscape design played an important role in marrying the institutional scale of the College to the residential scale of this important historic district of Charleston. The city of Charleston, neighborhood residents and College officials all played important roles in shaping the final design and choice of materials for streetscape and campus. Over the years the College of Charleston has been recognized by national and state design awards and was chosen as one of the top 20 most significant landscaped places in America.
