Colleton River Plantation lies within a historic tract of land that was once know as the Devil’s Elbow Barony.  This 12,000 acre parcel was granted to John Colleton, the grandson of the first Sir John Colleton, one of several original landowners who were given the land for their loyalty and constancy to the crown by a grateful King Charles II of England.

Throughout the 18th Century, the barony was used primarily for farming with rice, indigo and cotton as the dominant crops.  The landowners and their families lived in plantation homes that became increasingly more elaborate as their antebellum lifestyle flourished.

EP/A was selected by Colleton River Company, L.P. to provide land planning and landscape architectural services for both phases of this private, residential, country club community.  Colleton River Plantation Phase I encompasses 700 acres offering 395 single-family home sites on the Colleton River.  EP/A created a plan where every residential lot has a choice of river, lakes, lagoons, pond, golf, or marsh views.  Amenities include: an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus golf course, and “Augusta National-type” par-3 course; an extensive practice range facility; a tennis facility designed by Stan Smith Designs; a clubhouse with six cottages; pool and tennis facilities, walking trails, and a boating facility.  Phase II encompasses another 700 acres and an 18 hole Pete Dye golf course.  Additionally, portions of the movie, The Legend of Bagger Vance, were filmed at Colleton River Plantation.
