Georgia Southern's Center for Wildlife Education has a mission of educating school age children about the value of wildlife. Phase I has a number of outdoor exhibits of indigenous bird species and a small amphitheater to give children a first hand look at the birds. Interior exhibits include insects and reptiles. The emphasis of Phase II is a series of wetland systems which will support wading birds and illustrate the value of wetlands in providing habitat for many species and their role in mitigating the effects of urban stormwater runoff. To illustrate this point, a “Storm Surge Exhibit” will recreate the effects of urban runoff and show how the wetlands serve to slow down the water and filter it. Simple water quality testing stations will be located at critical points, clearly demonstrating the value of wetlands in improving water quality. A system of accessible trails and boardwalks will interconnect the exhibits with interpretive signage at each trail node.
