Edward Pinckney/Associates served as Master Planning and Urban Design Consultants with Sasaki and Associates in development of the Charleston Waterfront Park master plan in historic Charleston, South Carolina. This plan includes redevelopment of an area along the Cooper River in the vicinity of Market Street, the Custom House, and the Cruise Ship terminal. All development within this area has to remain consistent with Charleston’s historic character. This attention to detail has gained the city worldwide recognition as a leader in historic preservation and restoration. The primary goal for the park, was to preserve and maintain the area’s traditional historic character and to preserve the valuable saltmarsh environment along the river’s edge. The pineapple fountain, symbol of hospitality and centerpiece of the park, reinforces the theme of the park which provides visitors and residents the opportunity to enjoy views of the city and the river. Elements of the park include a plaza, a wharf, large grassy areas, fountains, benches, and an open recreation shelter with swings; pedestrian paths and a promenade along the entire length of the water’s edge with streetscape improvements such as ample seating provided by benches and low seating walls; a series of 12 uniquely designed sitting gardens shaded by a bosque of live oaks; prominent places for sculpture; bronze castings depicting the history of this place; a very active fishing pier; engravings of donors to the park fund; perennial flower beds; two large greenswards; and, a passive park and promenade along the residential neighborhood adjacent to the park.
