Robert Mills House & Park
Columbia, South Carolina
Edward Pinckney/Associates, Ltd. furnished comprehensive landscape design and construction documents for total site improvements and renovation for these historic houses and gardens. This historic complex includes two homes, Ainsley Hall and the Hampton Preston House, and covers two blocks (roughly 8 acres) in the heart of downtown Columbia, SC. The Ainsley Hall mansion, now called the Robert Mills Historic House and Garden, was designed by the first American-born architect, Robert Mills in 1823. In 1966, the house and entire block was purchased by the Columbia Historic Foundation to rescue it from the wrecking crews and restore it to original condition. The restoration goal was to tell the story of the house and gardens’ rich heritage and provide a generous open space in an historic urban setting.
