The concept for the landscape design was simple: showy and colorful plants planted along the house and in certain view corridors and native and hardy plants specified to blend with the existing vegetation. However, once installation began, some unexpected obstacles arose. These included designing a tree well to protect an existing oak tree and allowing for a retaining wall in an area of the site where grading would have killed existing pines. Because the clients wished to remove some scraggly junipers located in the Public Beach Trust Area on their property and also to have a private beach walkover installed, EP/A had to obtain approvals from several agencies, including the Office of Coastal Resource Management and Sea Pines Architectural Review Board.
